Christmas stockings for the patients at Children’s Mercy Hospital The pattern and instructions are provided by Missouri Sewing Machine Company You can also make these stockings at home and turn them into any Missouri Sewing Machine Co. location by October 1st. We all have a stash of fabric-- wouldn’t it be great to pull some of it out and make a stocking for a sick child. Hope you join us. |

Pattern Grading for the Home Sewist with Jennifer Stern

Join Jennifer to learn an easy method for sizing a clothing pattern to fit you. We'll start the class with a discussion about pattern sizing and grading as it relates to fitting a pattern. Then we'll work together step-by-step to grade a basic pattern up a size and down a size. We'll discuss how you can use this easy method to size and fit patterns to your unique shape. You'll leave class with step-by-step instructions and a set of grading rules to use to grade your patterns at home along with samples of graded patterns that you worked on in class.

If you have a pattern in your stash that you want to make out of knit, but it was designed for non-stretch fabric, this is the class for you. I've made a set of samples to show you how a top and pant pattern fits in non-stretch fabric. Then I used adjusted pattern pieces to make them out of knit or stretch fabric. The key to adjusting the pattern correctly is to determine how much wearable stretch your fabric has. Just because a fabric can stretch 30% doesn't mean you want it to. I'll show you the difference between maximum stretch and wearable stretch. Then learn how to adjust your pattern pieces for a perfect fit. Discover what kinds of non-stretch patterns are easier to adjust for stretch fabric. I'll also talk about how to use your adjusted pattern pieces to create new styles.

In The Whole Scoop ~ Multi-Method Pants Fitting Class, we start with the basic framework of Top Down, Center Out (described by R. Collins in Threads magazine #218) by creating a fitted non-stretch waistband that is used to fit a single-leg muslin. I'll show you how to work with "sticky pins" to help manage the fabric around your waistline & make drape fitting a snap. After smoothing the wrinkles we'll finish with some traditional pants fitting techniques to achieve the fit you're looking for. One of the things that may need to be adjusted is the position of the crotch curve, I'll show you how to get it in the right spot using a fit adjustment that does not affect other vertical dimensions of the pattern like pulling it up at the waist or pleating out excess vertical length. Did you know that some of the fitting is hidden in the center front/center back seams? I'll share how to take advantage of these edges to create pattern pieces that agree with your curves and allow the fabric to hang properly. You can also play with the ease along the leg, by adjusting both the side and inseams. Then I'll show you how to transfer these adjustments to your pattern pieces before cutting out the second leg and sewing a whole pair of pants. Jennifer is so excited to have you join her for the Raglan Sleeve Top Workshop. This top is one of her favorite go-to tops to wear all year round. Choose two different coordinating knits (with 25% stretch) for the body of the top and the sleeves. We?ll start by comparing your body measurements to the pattern to pick out the best starting size. Then Jennifer will show you some simple fit adjustments you may need to make before cutting out your pieces. Plus, customize your Raglan by picking the sleeve length that you love best. She will show you how to get professional results whether you?re using your serger or sewing machine to construct your Raglan. If you?re new to garment sewing, the Raglan is a great project to start with because the sleeves are not traditional set-in or flat constructed. Just sew two short seams front and back and the sleeves are in! For a sporty look, add the optional kangaroo pocket and band to finish the hem.
